Many of you may have heard about Present Music’s season opener this Saturday.  CONCERTO FOR TURNTABLES and ORCHESTRA’s American Premier will happen downtown Milwaukee this weekend.  You may have heard about Gabriel Prokofiev’s extraordinary composition that features a live DJ scratch part in the piece, but you may not know that I am the DJ for this performance!

Gabriel original wrote this piece with world champion scratch DJ, Yoda.  DJ Yoda performed recently here in Milwaukee…

The UK premier of this piece was something the world have never seen…

When I was originally asked to participate in this performance, I was fairly casual about the idea.  I one movement of the piece and thought, “Ok, I gotta scratch over this orchestra.”  But that was the understatement of the year.  The 5 movement composition includes a well notated and complex DJ part, that includes scratches, beat juggles, tone melodies and scratch drumming.  It’s intense!

I began rehearsals with the group on Wednesday, and feel very comfortable now with the ensemble.  Everyone has been very welcoming and helpful with the production.  Most of all, I’ve forged a great relationship with Gabriel.  He has a very unique approach to composition, and his label  NONCLASSICAL is home to some of the most unusual music I’ve heard in a very long time.
