This week on 7 o Clock sample I’ve decided to take a look at the music of French electronic duo… JUSTICE.
If you ran into Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay on the subway, you may think they were in a retro metal band. There look is not too far off from their music. They often use progressive rock and metal samples to create their unique larger than life tracks.
Their debut album †, alternatively known as Cross, released in June of 2007. This album thrust Justice to the top of the international electronic scene. Like Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers and the like, this dynamic duo have been selling out arenas and headlining some of the biggest music festivals.
They pull from a wide variety of sample sources, including funk, disco, rock and oddly enough, horror movie sound tracks.
Check out track 5 on CROSS.
Cool sounds huh?
Well check out the sample’s source…
That’s the sounds of Italian progressive rock outfit GOBLIN. Goblin are an Italian progressive rock band known for their soundtracks for Dario Argento films. They had an brief and unsuccessful run in the 70s as the Cherry Five. They began to compose scores for horror films, and achieved a large cult following through these films.

Lots of songs never make it to the radio that are getting lots of attention online. Live tracks, sanctioned and unsanctioned remixes, mash-ups, overlooked gems by unsigned artists. Every week on “Are You Feeling This,” we invite you to hear what the buzz is all about. You tell us what you think. Vote in the Are You Feeling This poll, leave a comment, send us an e-mail.
First up is the Milwaukee/Brooklyn duo French Horn Rebellion with “This Moment” from their album “The Infinite Music of French Horn Rebellion.
Next we have music from another Brooklyn outfit by the name of Frankie Rose and The Outs. We have the song “Candy from their self-titled debut release.
Frankie Rose has a reputation for her minimal, Maureen Tucker-like beats and iconic presence in such buzz-stirring bands as Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls, and Vivian Girls. Those groups spearheaded a scene that mixed the sounds of lo-fi garage, big reverb-drenched Phil Spector-produced 60s girl groups, the noise aesthetic of the Jesus And Mary Chain with a touch of Velvet Underground and a strong DIY ethic.
Maximum Balloon is up next with a track featuring Yeah Yeah Yeah’s front woman Karen O. Maximum Balloon is a project from producer and member of another Brooklyn band TV On The Radio. The album is due out on September 21st.
Finally, we round out this week’s Are You Feeling This with more Brooklyn artists. This time is the duo Matt & Kim. We have the song Cameras from their 3rd studio album Sidewalks. The duo will be playing in Madison on September 21st at The Majestic Theater.
Listen to tracks below and vote for the one you are feeling the most.
Many of you may have heard about Present Music’s season opener this Saturday. CONCERTO FOR TURNTABLES and ORCHESTRA’s American Premier will happen downtown Milwaukee this weekend. You may have heard about Gabriel Prokofiev’s extraordinary composition that features a live DJ scratch part in the piece, but you may not know that I am the DJ for this performance!
Gabriel original wrote this piece with world champion scratch DJ, Yoda. DJ Yoda performed recently here in Milwaukee…
The UK premier of this piece was something the world have never seen…
When I was originally asked to participate in this performance, I was fairly casual about the idea. I one movement of the piece and thought, “Ok, I gotta scratch over this orchestra.” But that was the understatement of the year. The 5 movement composition includes a well notated and complex DJ part, that includes scratches, beat juggles, tone melodies and scratch drumming. It’s intense!
I began rehearsals with the group on Wednesday, and feel very comfortable now with the ensemble. Everyone has been very welcoming and helpful with the production. Most of all, I’ve forged a great relationship with Gabriel. He has a very unique approach to composition, and his label NONCLASSICAL is home to some of the most unusual music I’ve heard in a very long time.
Here is a sneak peek of what you will see this Saturday if you come to Turner Hall.
The show kicks off at 8pm, and for limited special offer, you can see the show for only $10. Just use the code “DJ” when you purchase the tickets online or just called (414)271-0711.
This week on SEVEN O CLOCK Sample we are looking at the sampling legacy of the Dust Brothers.
EZ Mike and King Gizmo have an impressive resume, that includes working with the Beastie Boys, Young MC, Tone Loc, The Rolling Stones, Hanson, and Beck.
The fellas have worked with Beck numerous times. Beck had the Dust Brothers produce his album Odelay, released in 1996. The album spawned the hit songs “Where It’s At” , “Devils Haircut” , “The New Pollution” and “Jack-Ass” They got into the studio together again in 2004 to produce Beck’s best charting album to date, Guero.
On Guero, Beck and the Dust Brothers pull together a lot of rare grooves and funky loops to build the back drop of the project.
One of my personal favorites is the track “HELL YES”
Great song, that samples another great song….
That’s the OHIO PLAYERS with “Far East Mississippi”
