Event: May Day

Tomorrow is May Day.

May Day also refers to various labor celebrations conducted on May 1 that commemorate the fight for the eight hour day. May Day in this regard is called International Workers’ Day, or Labour Day, and the choice of the 1st of May is a commemoration by the Second International for the working Americans involved in the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago, Illinois. -Wikipedia

Also tomorrow will be “A Day Without Latinos”.  This event is a push for national immigration reform.  A march will be held on May 1st on S. 5th and Washington in Milwaukee, and it is organized by Voces de la Frontera.

International Pop Overthrow in Milwaukee

The world renowned International Pop Overthrow has landed in our lap right here in Milwaukee. What originated in L.A. and spread to major cities around the world has found it’s way here. It’s a four day power pop fest that takes place this Thur. through Sat. at Linneman’s in River West. Thursday afternoon festival founder David Bash will be my guest in the studio along with Milwaukee Power Popsters The Nice Outfit. Don’t miss it and check out the festival line up. If you love crunchy guitars, tight vocal harmonies, Farfisa and Vox organs, and chiming Rickenbackers wrapped up in 2 1/2 minutes of hook laden bliss then this is THE event for you.

Maxie’s Does Derby

This Saturday is the first Saturday in May. Now that probably doesn’t mean anything special to you, but for someone from Kentucky it means a lot. It’s Derby Day baby, and that means a whole lot more than just the greatest two minutes in sports. It means parties, parties and more parties. In fact, in my hometown of Louisville the parties start about a month before Derby Day and increase in frequency and intensity right up through race day. Bluegrass Mardi Gras if you will.

Dan Sidner over at Maxie’s Southern Comfort is a connoisseur of all things Southern and has put together an all day affair that does this Kentucky boy proud. Check out this menu! Lot’s of Kentucky delicacies and specialties like Beef Tenderloin with Henry Bain’s Sauce, Hot Browns, Benedictine, Ambrosia Salad, Derby Pie and much more. Bring on the mint juleps!

Great food, great music, great Kentucky Bourbon and all of the betting proceeds go to the Hunger Task Force. Sounds like a great way to spend the first Saturday in May to me.
