Sound Travels: Warm for Cool… Samba Brazil

Thank you all, as ever, for checking out the vibe here with Sound Travels. This week I was feeling the cold to my bones as the weather took a natural turn toward that special Wisconsin degree so I chose to treat this dread I tend to get as winter rolls in, with some music from a place much warmer. I do this a lot, and it probably goes a long way to understanding my love of tropical music even though I haven’t travelled to many of the warm climates whose music I like to play.

Today’s hot destination is Brazil, a country I have dreams about travelling to. Never been there mind you, but after hearing the music from Brazil some years ago, I was hooked and never looked back…except for the fact that I never left, simply loved to be taken to there with the music. Brazil is a big place however, big and diverse, with a range of music reflecting that fact. So as I got down to the mix it was quickly apparent that so much had to be left out just to make the mix work. Sad but true, but still good for you. How so? Today we’ll go to Southern Brazil, and get warmed by some samba sounds from Rio de Janeiro and I’ll keep the groove in line for you enjoy this bit of time. Besides, there’s always next week, when I’ll go back to Brazil for more inspiration from some of their other music styles.

Oh yeah, enjoy the mix…

Sound Travels 11/28/08: Samba Brazil

Happy Thanksgiving!

I wanted to share the music of one of my favorite musicians, George Winston.  I had the honor to see him live three times in my life thus far.  Being a composer myself, I greatly appreciate the sounds and seasons of George Winston.  He will be coming through the midwest again before Christmas.

Thanks for taking a moment to allow to me remind you to celebrate life; all the joys and triumphs, peaks and valleys, lead us to become thankful for all that life brings us. Happy Thanksgiving!

Fugees’ John Forte pardoned by George Bush!

I just got news that President George W. Bush pardoned The Fugees’ mc and producer John Forte.

John Forte‘s 14 year bid for accepting a briefcase with $1.4 million worth of cocaine has come to end with a stroke of still-President Bush’s pen.  Forte (official myspace ), a first time (and non-violent) offender, began his sentence in 2001.  Should he not have been granted commuted sentence, he would remain behind bars for another 5-7 years (potential early release due to good behavior and such).  We’re glad to say that come December 22nd, the Jersey resident and Refugee camp MC/Producer will hopefully go back to slangin’ “flow worlwide like a current” and not anything else. What are your thought on this pardon?

Remix Franz Ferdinand’s “Ulysses”

In cased you missed New Music Wednesday this week we featured Franz Ferdinand’s new single “Ulysses” from their forthcoming album “Tonight”.  Apparently, the music site beatportal is holding a remix competion for the song.  So all you aspiring bedroom producers and djs get to crackin’.  Let me know if you make remix, I will post it here on the blog, and maybe play it on the Rhythm Lab, or Are You Feeling This.

Scottish indie dance group Franz Ferdinand has teamed up with Beatportal to challenge aspiring producers to remix a forthcoming track from their new album.

But in a twist that the band hopes will lead to more unique and diverse remixes, the original of ‘Ulysses’ is not being made available to contestants as it will only be released in January.

The idea is to create a hotpot of remixes that are not tainted by the direction and mood of the original version.

Franz Ferdinand’s lead vocalist Alex Kapranos told Beatportal that the band “want to be surprised by the geniuses out there that no one has heard of yet.”

As well as having their remix released on Domino Records, the winner will also receive 500€. Not bad.
