Don’t Sleep On Heavy D

That’s right, that Heavy D. Old school as hell, rappin since the beginning and got sorta big time  in the early 90’s, that Heavy D.. Damn, I had forgotten about him. That is, until it was made aware to me that he was in fact not dead, actually, had a brand new album and even more surprising, that it was good. Sceptical, I checked it out…and it’s really good, and it’s like nothing I’ve heard him do, which is lock the patois and rock the mic in a reggae fashion. Fiyuh!515b0132ywl_sl500_aa240_

Lover’s Rock is really how he flips it on his new album Vibe, which dropped in September this year, as he alternates though smooth love songs sung in a distinct Jamaican patois that is not fake, Heavy is from the JA and move to NYC as a kid, where he started rapping and fored the crew that would later become Heavy D and The Boyz. The trip he’s been on since has included acting in a number of films and TV shows as well as a few albums that some claim to be underated. Don’t know about them, but I can tell you this, the cut “Long Distance Girlfriend” is fresh, check it out for yourself…

Circulate those Dollars in 2009!

Today’s Seven O Clock Sample is brought to us by the late great J Dilla. In 2000, Dilla remixed a track for the UK neo-soul / trip hop group SPACEK. After they parted ways, Steve Spacek linked up with Dilla again for the track Dollars.

This Dilla production was a flip of Billy Paul’s “Let The Dollars Circulate”, from his album WHEN LOVE IS NEW.

I first heard this beat on a bootleg Dilla beat tape back in 2003 or so, I loved the beat, and I really love the original!

… and as a side note…

Here is a great example of how a mediocre rapper, can ruin a great sample. I had zero intention of playing this one on air. Listen for yourself and see why.

To quote Chris Rock; ” I Love Hip Hop, but sometimes I Have a hard time defending it! ”

Jazz Legend FREDDIE HUBBARD R.I.P.

Legendary jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard passed away yesterday.
He left behind a music library that will continue to inspire for generations. With over 300 recordings and a few Grammys on his shelf, Freddie was one of the most iconic figures of the Blue Not family. He began recording with Blue Note i the early 60s, after becoming jam buddies with the great John Coltrane.

Freddie has played with Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk, Cannonball Adderley, and more. He was also a member of Miles Davis’ legendary 1960s quintet — Hancock, Shorter, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, who were also known as V.S.O.P.

R.I.P. Freddie and thank you for making the world a better place!
