Sound Travels Monday Reggae Potion

[Audio=https://radiomilwaukee.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/reggae-potion.mp3]

Sound Travels goes back to the root today with music from my favorite style, and the one that got me started with this whole DJ thing; Reggae. I feel like I already play plenty here through ST, but the case remains more valid that I rarely devote an entire week to it. So here in the so-called dog-days of summer I have an irie blend of cuts old and new. The sound leans ever-so-slightly towards the production of Lee “Scratch” Perry, but otherwise has a touch of early dancehall from Sister Nancy, whose claim to be first female DJ (i.e. MC) may in fact be close to the truth; “Bam Bam” certainly is her most timeless anthem.

Brand new music from British Colombia’s Big Bass Theory, a bass-driven riddim from a cat named Sean “Sirbassa” Hill, whose band makes killer reggae tunes without derivation– roots to branch. And the album Iscored that cut from is Right as well, called One Dub, it thankfully is not just that(that’s just what it is.) A super-classic cut from Augustus Pablo’s collabration with the aforementioned Lee Perry, g’waan and “Vibrate On.” Into another fave from lover’s rock crooner Junior Delahaye, a stunner from Brooklyn-based Bullwackies reggae label. If there is a more underlooked and better label than this one, let me know!

Even gotchya a reggae cover of the White Stripes’ “7 Nation Army.” this one is from The Dynamics, off their very nice album Version Excursion, which hits each cover in a way that never feels mercenary, still feels reggae. The end is never, but here it is, one of the first dub reggae songs I ever heard, Sly & Robbie’s absolutely crucial “Burial Dub.” Enjoy.

Bob Marley “Jamming” B Is For Bob
