Our Creatures and Creators Halloween Bash is just a few days away. We are very excited about all of the different elements that are coming together for this party….
ART! MUSIC! and FASHION!
Today we asked Gina Barrington and Sheena Lockett to come down to the 88NINE studios and tell us all about the fashion element of this weekends party.

Gina has been the fashion director with Made In Milwaukee since last year. She offered some cool insight into her involvement with the organization, and the unique elements that this fashion show brings. Sheena chimed in to tell us about her new shopBoutique Revolution, and the unique pieces that she has created for this event.

The Prodigy does Thriller

This week’s Seven O’Clock Samples have been dedicated to the ultimate Halloween song….
THRILLER!

Many artists have sampled this song…
Public Enemy’s 911 is a Joke, N.W.A’s 100 Miles and Runnin’, Large Professor’s The Mad Scientist ,and DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince’s Rhythm Trax House Party Style uses the song at the end of the track.
Most of the above mentioned songs use Vicent Price’s diabolical laugh. But today’s artist uses the main synth loop!

On their 4th studio album, the Prodigy sampled MJ’s it Thriller for this song.

This album was a departure from their hit THE FAT OF THE LAND. The only member of the group who actually is on this album is the main producer Liam Howlett. Contributors included actress Juliette Lewis, Oasis frontmen Liam and Noel Gallagher, Kool Keith and The Magnificent Ping Pong Bitches.

Great music! Great Sample!!!!

Interview with JIMBOT

This morning we began a series of interviews with some of the Milwaukee talent that you can find at the upcoming CREATURES and CREATORS Halloween Party on October 31st at Turner Hall.

Our partnership with Made In Milwaukee has helped us to put together an impressive list of Milwaukee artists. One of those artists is Jim “JIMBOT” Demski.

This is Jim’s 2nd event with Made In Milwaukee and his first with us. Besides painting, he really enjoys cartooning, sculpture, and working on his plans for world domination. James works full-time as a T-Shirt designer, as well as a freelance artist/illustrator.
Check out my interview with Jim on this morning’s show.

The Large Professor’s Thriller

So this week I am exploring songs that have sampled the most infamous Halloween song since the “Monster Mash”.

You need not say to much to introduce this song. Unless you’ve been living under a rock since 1982, you know all about this jam. You may even hear this song at the upcoming Creatures and Creators Halloween Party!

This got me diggin’ for other artist’s who have used this track. Michael Jackson samples are like Beatles samples; they exist, but they are hard to come by. One of my favorite Hip Hop artists is the Large Professor. I’ve explored some of his past work with Main Source in this blog post…

As an MC with main source, Large Pro also produced beats for the group and worked with many of the whos-who of New York Hip Hop. Nas, Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest, and Slick Rick to name a few.
In 1996 Large Pro recorded a solo album called “THE LP”. It was shelved by Geffen records, but a single was released which included this track…

The album was re-released this past year after being bootlegged for over a decade. Thank goodness the record industry has changed so much in the past 10 years.

The Weekly Top 5 Countdown: Scandinavia

Hey all, Marcus here with your Top 5 recap. This week, Scott Mullins and I, noticed that 88Nine plays a lot music from Scandinavian artists; like Lykke Li, Miike Snow, Peter Bjorn & John etc…, and had a feeling that it is a bit top 5more than a trend. Lots of great music coming outta countries like Sweden, Norway, Denmark and such. So here’s a few more good ones we thought of (that we aren’t even playing!), and illustrating perhaps a greater truth; that of the dearth of talent coming out of Northern Europe. This is what we played for you yesterday…
