My New Year Resolution: “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish”

Normally, I’m not into resolutions. However, when I came across this commencement speech by Steve Jobs back in 2005, I was inspired to give resolutions another shot.  Jobs tells three stories about his life and how it affected his dreams and passions and at the close of the speech, one statement stood out for me: “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish”.  I think those are good words to live by especially in these times.

Freebie: Selected 2009 tracks from 4AD records

4AD Logo

Indie labels had a great year in 2009.  Every time I got a package from labels like Warp, Ninja Tune, Rhymesayers, and other indie labels, I got excited. The same excitement can’t be said for the major labels. These indie labels take pride in putting the music first and not some crazy gimmick.  The label 4AD is no different, and to show the quality of music they released in 2009, they are giving a track away from every record they released this year.

From 4AD:

To celebrate another year of quality 4AD recordings you are able to click through HERE to download a track from each of the records we released in 2009, featuring Atlas Sound, The Big Pink, Camera Obscura, The National, Deerhunter, Tune-Yards, M.Ward, St. Vincent and more.

2009 Year in Review from Skillz and Jib Jab

Well it is that time where everyone does their best of 2009 lists, and year in review shows. However there are only two cats that do the year in review better than anyone and that is MC Skillz’s annual rap-up and Jib Jab’s year in review video. Watch, listen and reflect.

Freebie: Doomtree’s Dessa, “Dixon’s Girl”

Dessa Darling

A lot of people been asking about a song we have been playing early this year called “Sadie Hawkins” by a very talented artist by the name of Dessa Darling of the Minneapolis hip hop collective Doomtree. I get questions like: Is she going to put out an album or is she ever going to perform in Milwaukee. Well I got answers for both of those questions. Yes and yes.  Dessa Darling will be releasing a full length album on January 19th called “A Badly Broken Code”, and she will be performing with fellow Doomtree artist P.O.S. March 20th, at Turner Hall Ballroom.  However, if you can’t wait until March to see her, you can catch her in Madison with Kid Sister and fellow Doomtree artist Sims this New Year’s Eve. In the meantime, check out and download a track from her forthcoming album.

Last week’s winner of Are You Feeling This was The XX.

Santa left you a sample under your tree!

Ho Ho How wonderful it is this time of year! I love to give the gift of music, so this X-Mas I’m presenting you with my favorite Holiday sample!

In 1987, the first installment of A VERY SPECIAL CHRISTMAS hit stores. This Christmas-themed compilation album was produced by A&M records to benefit Special Olympics. The first installment featured a , now, Christmas “classic” by RUN DMC.

(this video is great! I love how the elf is wearing a track suit!)

Jam Master Jay is cutting a super funky Christmas album by the soulful Mr. Clarence Carter.

Happy Ho Ho Holidays!
