An Evening with ROBERT FRANCIS

From time to time, we at Radio Milwaukee present special concert experiences and events.  We’ve  had some awesome groups come to town and this month, we are excited to present and evening with Robert Francis.

We are happy to host Robert and his band at Whiskey Bar’s beautiful live music room “the Venue”.  If you were able to attend our 3rd annual MILWAUKEE MUSIC AWARDS PARTY, then you know how great this space is.

Robert Francis is currently on tour in support of his new album Before Nightfall.

You’ve heard his hit single “Junebug” here on 88NINE.

Well this is your chance to see Robert LIVE in Milwaukee, and to help support 88NINE at the same time.

This special $8.89 show is a fundraiser for your favorite independent radio station.  100% of the proceeds for this show will go directly to listener supported 88NINE Radio Milwaukee.

There are limited tickets available for this special engagement, so if you are thinking, ” Hey, I’d like to see that show!”; now is your time to act.  While tickets will be available at the door, we’ve set up pre-sales online due to high demand for Robert’s tour.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and B REAL?

This week on the Seven O Clock sample, we continue our exploration of the music of Summerfest.

The world’s largest music festival kicks continues today on Milwaukee’s lakefront, so I thought it’d be smart to look into some of the samples we may hear tonight.

Headlining the US Cellular stage tonight, is Hip Hop trio and rap legends CYPRESS HILL!

Cypress Hill just released, Rise Up; their eighth studio album. It is their first album of new material in six years, following 2004’s Till Death Do Us Part. This album features production from their DJ, MUGGS as well as Pete Rock, Jake One and Jim Jonsin. Jonsin produced their newest single, “Armada Latina'” which features Cuban rapper Pitbull and Puerto Rican singer Marc Anthony.

That’s a JAM! There is no doubt that is also a familiar and well-known sample…. Where is it from?

Well if you guessed it… It’s Crosby, Stills, and Nash. From their self titled 1969 release, here is Suite : Judy Blue Eyes.

(fast forward to 7:10 for the sample)

Are You Feeling This | Tennis, Bad Rabbits, Of Montreal and Holy Roman Army

We have music from Tennis, Bad Rabbits, Of Montreal, and a cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” from Holy Roman Army. Take a listen below and let us know what you think by voting in the “Are You Feeling This” listener poll.

While you were out! ( A Summerfest catch up! )

If you’ve been under a rock for the past few days, SUMMERFEST is going on right now here in Milwaukee. Summerfest is the world’s largest music festival. With over 700 bands and 1 stages of music from Noon to Midnight each day of the fest, there are few festivals that can handle the marathon of music that is Summerfest.

As a life long Wisconsin resident, I ( and many of my peers ) take Summerfest for granted.  I’ve been going to Summerfest since I was a kid.  ( my mom has the pictures to prove it! )  So I realize that many of our listeners, followers and fans, may not have such an extensive Summerfest history, so I decided to bring you up to speed on what has been going on this past few days.

Our good friends at MINDPOOL PRODUCTIONS are recording SO MUCH video coverage of this year’s festival.  They are getting great interviews and live footage of the music on the lake front this year.

Here is what you’ve missed so far…

Opening night the legendary WAILERS were the headliners for the 88NINE Potowatomi Pavillion stage!

PASSION PIT also rocked the lake front at the  US Cellular stage…

On Friday night COWBOY MOUTH was the headliner on our stage…

The weekend saw a ton of great acts, Public Enemy, Theievery Corporation, The Constellations, Cage The Elephant, The Gufs, Robert Randolf, B.B. King and Less Than Jake to name a few.

Check out the Mindpool channel on YouTube, and check back with us for more updates and Summerfest fun.

Event | Unlooped – The Original Milwaukee Mash-Up, Friday, June 25th at B-Side

This is a little self-promotion on my part. On Friday, June 25th at B-Side (235 S. 2nd Street), a new monthly called Unlooped kicks off.  The monthly has been billed as the Original Milwaukee Mash-Up. The night is hosted by WMSE’s BTS.WRKNG and 88Nine’s DJ Tarik and designer DeChazier Stokes-Johnson. Each month UnLooped brings you something new with a focus on electronic music. UnLooped Friday will feature a live one of kind collaboration with artists from various genres, and end the night with a dance party. This first one is special album release party for Milwaukee electronic producer/dj Lorn, who is signed to Flying Lotus’ label Brainfeeder. He just release his amazing album “Nothing Else”  He will perform a special set that night.  In addition to that, there will be a special live collaboration between Nick Sanborn(Buffalo, Made of Oak, Listening Party Records, and Decibully), Jeanna Salzer(Jeanna Salzer Trio), and Rory Sazama.  There will also be DJ sets from BTS.WRKNG(WMSE, Signaldrift), myself, and 88Nine producer Adam Carr. This will be Adam’s debut DJ set.  The event kicks of at 10pm at B-Side.  You can find more information at Unlooped’s Facebook page.
