Hell Yes Dust Bros

This week on SEVEN O CLOCK Sample we are looking at the sampling legacy of the Dust Brothers.

EZ Mike and King Gizmo have an impressive resume, that includes working with the Beastie Boys, Young MC, Tone Loc, The Rolling Stones, Hanson, and Beck.

The fellas have worked with Beck numerous times. Beck had the Dust Brothers produce his album Odelay, released in 1996. The album spawned the hit songs “Where It’s At” , “Devils Haircut” , “The New Pollution” and “Jack-Ass”  They got into the studio together again in 2004 to produce Beck’s best charting album to date, Guero.

On Guero, Beck and the Dust Brothers pull together a lot of rare grooves and funky loops to build the back drop of the project.

One of my personal favorites is the track “HELL YES”

Great song, that samples another great song….

That’s the OHIO PLAYERS with “Far East Mississippi”

WOW!

Beck Baroque

Well I guess if you invite Danger Mouse to be the co-producer of your 8th album, you are gonna find yourself experimenting with some odd samples.
That’s what happened when Beck teamed up with the Gnarles Barkley producer on his 2008 release MODERN GUILT.

This avant-garde sample comes from an odd French music team known as Paul Piot & Paul Guiot.
Here is there song “Amour, vacances et baroque”

Album of the Day: “War Child presents … Heroes”

war-child-heroes

Sometimes an album comes across our desk that needs to be shared in its entirety.

War Child presents … Heroes is modestly described as “the greatest covers album of all time.”  We don’t disagree.  TV On The Radio covering Bowie.  Beck covering Dylan.  Lily Allen covering The Clash.  Estelle covering Stevie Wonder.  See the complete track listing below.

The album is a benefit for War Child International, a network of organizations working across the world to help children affected by war.  What makes the album unusual is that the songs and the bands doing the covers (The Hold Steady, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Franz Ferdinand, Duffy, etc.) were chosen by the original artists.

Here’s the track list.  Click the “info” link for the story behind the song.  And listen all day to 88Nine as we play tracks from the album.  Let us know what you think!

As some of you may know, Beck has a new album coming out entitled “Modern Guilt” This is album is produced by Danger Mouse who also produced the latest Black Keys records. Danger Mouse is turning into the next Rick Rubin, and it all started with a mash-up album entitled “The Grey Album” which mashed up Jay-Z’s “Black Album” and the Beatles’ “White Album”.
