Much More Dilla

This morning we are continuing or exploration of J Dilla samples…

In the mid and later 200os, the entire rap world was buzzing about Dilla’s beat tapes.  As many producers often do, J Dilla would give out “tapes” of his beats for Emcees to preview and hopefully, buy.  In order to avoid his beats getting snatched up with out proper licence, Dilla found a number of creative ways to blend his neats together, and tag them with the infamous “JAY DILA!” exclamation.

These “tapes” began to circulate around the Hip Hop underground, and many rap fans were getting their hands on Dilla’s DONUTS, as they came to be known in the industry.  I was among these underground rap heads who were itching to get their hands on the Dilla tapes.

I had a few, and one beat that stuck out in my head was this one…

I’m not the only one who loved this beat… A few months later I heard this track.

This is one of my favorite De La tracks from this album, and that says a lot, because this album is fantastic!

So where did Dilla get this sample from?

In 1976, L.T.D. (which stands for Love, Togetherness, and Devotion), released LOVE TO THE WORLD on A&M records.  The album contained a number of great soul jams, including this cut…

Nice huh?

M.I.A.’s Original Savannah Showers

( Boy, I’m getting cheesy with these mash up titles… )

Hey Hey Y’all, it’s time for another 7 O’clock sample!
This week were are exploring the music of M.I.A. We are looking forward to seeing what her new album is going to be like, so I thought I’d look back at some of her hits and open the sample box!
On her debut album ARULAR, M.I.A. had a number of breakout hits, including this one…

That catchy hook was NOT originally written by Ms. Mia, it actually comes from the Bronx based swing group DR BUZZARD’s ORIGINAL SAVANNAH BAND. This group formed in mid 70s and had a number of hits, that have been sampled by such groups as A Tribe Called Quest, Ghostface Killah, De La Soul, and in today’s example, M.I.A.

Here is the original track…

De La Soul with Paul McCartnery. That’s Simply Wonderful!

To wrap up the year, I’ve decided to pull out some Holiday editions of the Seven O Clock Sample. Today’s is not a Holiday track by definition, but it does sample a Holiday classic.
In 2001, De La Soul released the 2nd of what was planned to be a 3 disc series, Art Official Intelligenece : BIONIX.

The AOI sereies was inended to be a 3 disc project, however Tommy Boy soon folded as a label, cutting short any further production.

One of my personal favorites in this album is the track SIMPLY.

It does not take long to recognize where that sample comes from…

Wonderful Christmastime is one of the most recognizable Paul McCartney songs ever. It’s become a Christmas Classic and I would have never guessed it would be sampled by De La Soul!!!

Change in Sampling.

On today’s 7 O Clock sample, I wanted to again go through De La Soul’s THREE FEET HIGH AND RISING ALBUM.
This album has well over 50 unique samples used throughout the project. ( I wish you could get away with that today!) This morning I played ” Change In Speak”.

This track uses a number of great samples.

“Bra” by Cymande

“No Strings Attached” by The Mad Lads

And some not so good ones!
The Monkees…

De La Samples

I was listening to De La Soul’s debut album THREE FEET HIGH AND RISING, over the weekend. Like The Beastie Boys PAUL’S BOUTIQUE album, this project is full of sample heavy hits.
This morning we explored the track Eye Know

This song has a whopping 6 samples in it. WHEW! Here we go…

The song begins with this sample from the Mad Lads…

Then throw in some drums from Sly and the Family Stone’s SING A SIMPLE SONG

We then sprinkle in some whistles from the soulful Mr. Otis Redding…

Whirl in some cool keys from Patrice Rushen’s Remind Me….

Then add two part’s Steely Dan…
FM

and for the chorus we throw in some PEG.

A great recipe for a great song!

Michael Jackson until the Breakadawn

With the King’s passing this past week, I decided to explore some of the songs that have sampled MJ.

In 1993, Prince Paul joined up with De La Soul to produce one of the best Hip Hop albums of that year; Buhloone Mind State.

This song includes an impressive list of popular samples. From Smokey Robinson, The Bar Kays, and The Pointer Sisters all the way to the King of Pop, MICHAEL JACKSON.
From his debut solo album, OFF THE WALL, here is I Can’t Help It.
