New M.I.A. | Born Free

M.I.A. has been causing some commotion of late.  In an interview, she said this about Lady GaGa:

“She models herself on Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like 20-year-old Ibiza disco, you know?”

Honestly, I have to agree with her on that statement. Shortly after that, she announced details about her forthcoming album due out in June.  The album will feature production from Diplo, Rusko, Switch, Blaqstarr, and Sleigh Bells’ Derek Miller (If you not heard of Sleigh Bells, you got to check them out). The track has a very raw, and abrasive vibe to it.  I think some might call this “punk”. Check it out and let me know what you think.  The album will be released on her imprint N.E.E.T, which has releases coming from Rye Rye and the Sleigh Bells. (via The Couch Sessions)

M.I.A. – “Born Free”

Event | DJ Sega at Moct this Friday, March 26th

This Friday at Moct, Philadelphia invades Milwaukee. Mad Decent artist DJ Sega brings his signature Club sound to Moct for a dirty, sweaty night of dancing.  I’m a big fan of club  music aka B-More of Philly Club since my days at Howard University in DC back in the late 90’s.  So if you are sick of the lame dance and top 40 music, check out my man DJ Sega.  Here is a little taste.

DJ Sega – “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

Sissy Nobby – “Lay It Down (DJ Sega Remix)”

Michael Jackson – “Beat It ( DJ Sega Remix)”

New Major Lazer featuring M.I.A. & Busy Signal

One of my favorite albums of 2009 came from a collaboration from DJs/Producers Diplo and Switch aka Major Lazer.  The album “Guns Don’t Kill People, Lazers Do!” was on repeat on my iPhone, computer, and when I spun out.  Well it looks like the dynamic duo will be back with an EP. They just dropped this track featuring fellow collaborators M.I.A. and dancehall star Busy Signal.  Go get your dutty wine on! (spotted at Urb)

Video | Killa Queenz, “Double Up” – Hip Hop Straight from Down Under

Whether you like it or not, hip hop is here to stay. The music has been around for over 30 years.  Its sound and production techniques can be heard in music from Animal Collective to Beck to Bjork to Lykke Li. Its influence can be heard all over the world from China to Australia, and Australia is where we are for this song and video.  The group is Killa Queenz and is one of the hottest groups down under, and they just dropped their video for “Double Up” featuring Lady Chann and production from Mad Decent’s South Rakkas Crew.  This track is sick.  Enjoy it and while you are at it download the mixtape from South Rakkas Crew where you can find this track.

Don’t Sleep On: I Blame Coco + Remixes from Diplo and Miike Snow

I Blame Coco

No this not a reference to Conan O’Brien and the late night show drama, but a relative new band out of England fronted by Coco Sumner(Eliot Pauline Styler-Sumner).  The name might not sound familiar but her father you might know.  Her father fronted a little known band called The Police.  Yes, she is the daughter of Sting(Gordon Matthew Sumner) and Trudie Styler.  At first, when I saw this and heard the song “Caesar”, I wasn’t sold. Then I heard Miike Snow’s and Diplo’s remixes and now I’m hooked.  I even enjoy the original version. She even kind of reminds me of her father in a weird way (if you know what I mean).

I Blame Coco recently scored a six-record deal with Island records. Will she live up to her father’s legacy? No, but I think she is very capable of making a name for herself with some good music.  Only time will tell, but if Caesar and these remixes are any indication, chances are better than average.  (shouts to Sheena Beaston)
