Saturday Session : HORSE FORCE

Every Saturday night here on 88NINE, we invite a MKE DJ to come into the studio and give us 2 hours of his or her choice.  This helps us provide our listeners with new and unique music that you will not find anywhere else, and it help us reach out further to the Milwaukee music scene.

On Saturday August 7th, we invited up and coming Dubstep producer / Deejay HORSE FORCE into the studio.

Milwaukee native Horse Force, is rapidly becoming one of the stars of Milwaukee’s growing dubstep scene. As a DJ, he is giving this city some of the heaviest bass sounds this side of the Mississippi. As a producer, his original work is catching the ears of record labels and fellow DJs across the globe. He had some great things to say about this city’s dubstep scene, and his hopes for the future of DJ culture here in the Brew City.

Take a listen…

Freebie | Happy Valentine’s Day – Dubstep style

The day I dread the most in the year is here. Happy, happy, joy, joy (insert sarcasm). With reluctance, I wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day, and I hope you spend it with that special someone. I would like to give you a special mixtape that you can play or give to that special one. It is entitled “Luvstep”. The mix was compiled by Dirty South Joe & Flufftronix. It takes the agressive sound of Dubstep, and put it little loving and sensitivity to it. The mix features music from Art of Noise, The XX, and Passion Pit to name a few. This mix is perfect for that candle lit dinner. Enjoy you cute lovebirds (ehhh, I think I’m going to be sick). Download it the mix here.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Video: GoldieLocks, “Cold Sweat”

Below is the video from an artist I featured in our ‘Don’t Sleep On’ features. Her name is GoldieLocks, and I’m a huge fan.  Serious folks, watch for her 2010. Her EP “I’m Not Her” will be out soon. You will find the song for this video in the upcoming EP.  (shouts to Sheena Beaston again!)

Don’t Sleep On (2010 Edition) | Goldielocks

Don’t let this face fool you. Goldielocks is a force to be reckon with in 2010.  Goldielocks is from England and she is a producer, dj, singer, and rapper. Throughout 2009, she was bubbling right under the surface. I was first introduce to this young renaissance woman from an amazing cover of one of my favorite N.E.R.D. songs called “Provider”. She adds a little soul and spice to dubstep, the breakout genre of 2009, and she is about to drop an EP called I’m Not Her on February 1st. You can check out a little bit of the sampler right here:

Her music was also featured in the 1AMI Nike city series, which you can view below.

If you need some context, just think Lily Allen, Lady Sovereign, MIA rolled up into one, but more intense. Definitely watch out for Goldielocks in 2010!

Bass(ic) Needs: Ngoma 3

ngoma3_front_myspaceAs many of you already know, one of my loves is music from around the world. Not simply “world music,” a term I am not all that fond of, but the vibrant sound of NOW. I love to be on the frontier, on styles and sounds that spring up in places that are hard to pronounce and even harder to get to. I love to experience music that I have never heard before, and of course I love to share it. If only to give someone an experience that they can’t preconceive– to test if the mind is open.

My favorite Dj at the moment articulates these tastes nicely, and has with his latest release eclipsed past favorite dj/Rupture, for the moment. I’m not talking about a big name here, but I am talking about DJ Zhao from Ngoma Soundsystem whose latest mix Ngoma 3 is crucial.

Don’t Sleep On: Matty G

8326995
He’s a dubstep producer out of Cali working the angle with a hip hop/reggae style that gives the genre a nice punch in the arm. His love of the Roland 808 to create beautiful dubs is also notable. There is not too much to note about this young artist– other than him creating an album that’s in my list of favorites. He did have a cut called “50,000 Watts” earlier this year that was a crucial banger bridging hip hop and dubstep. However, it is his brand new album Take You Back, that has me buzzin with cat’s potential. I’ll mark him as an artist to watch for 2009 because this release on Argon Records is fresher than fresh with dynamic instrumentals that move and live , alongside formidable contributions from relatively unknown vocalists like Juakali, Eugene or Fyah Luvah. The effect is raw, and he gets great work from all the collaborators, an album that is 14-for-14, all the cuts are dope! But then you don’t me to tell you that, you just need a track…
