A spooky sample

This week on 7 o Clock sample I’ve decided to take a look at the music of French electronic duo… JUSTICE.

If you ran into Gaspard Augé  and Xavier de Rosnay on the subway, you may think they were in a retro metal band.  There look is not too far off from their music.  They often use progressive rock and metal samples to create their unique larger than life tracks.

Their debut album , alternatively known as Cross, released in June of 2007.  This album thrust Justice to the top of the international electronic scene.  Like Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers and the like, this dynamic duo have been selling out arenas and headlining some of the biggest music festivals.

They pull from a wide variety of sample sources, including funk, disco, rock and oddly enough, horror movie sound tracks.

Check out track 5 on CROSS.

Cool sounds huh?

Well check out the sample’s source…

CREEPY!

That’s the sounds of Italian progressive rock outfit GOBLIN.  Goblin are an Italian progressive rock band known for their soundtracks for Dario Argento films.  They had an brief and unsuccessful run  in the 70s as the Cherry Five.  They began to compose scores for horror films, and achieved a large cult following through these films.

Saturday Session : HORSE FORCE

Every Saturday night here on 88NINE, we invite a MKE DJ to come into the studio and give us 2 hours of his or her choice.  This helps us provide our listeners with new and unique music that you will not find anywhere else, and it help us reach out further to the Milwaukee music scene.

On Saturday August 7th, we invited up and coming Dubstep producer / Deejay HORSE FORCE into the studio.

Milwaukee native Horse Force, is rapidly becoming one of the stars of Milwaukee’s growing dubstep scene. As a DJ, he is giving this city some of the heaviest bass sounds this side of the Mississippi. As a producer, his original work is catching the ears of record labels and fellow DJs across the globe. He had some great things to say about this city’s dubstep scene, and his hopes for the future of DJ culture here in the Brew City.

Take a listen…

It is the type of track you would play on a scenic road trip.  Check it out for yourself. “Two Agents” will be out on May 25th. (photo credit: Klück)

Black Music Month Mixtape #3: Electronic and Dance

Vodpod videos no longer available.

This week’s mixtape is close to my heart.  It is all about the contribution of black artist to electronic and dance music.  From the early sounds of Electro and Detroit Techno, to the UK sounds of Trip-Hop and Drum and Bass, to the experimental beats of today, Black artist have put a stamp on Electronic and Dance Music.

This Mixtape includes music from Detroit Techno legends Model 500 and Inner City, to the Electro sounds of Dr Dre (long before his days of N.W.A.), and Newcleus.  Then we crossed the pond to our UK neighbors and the sounds of trip-hop, drum and bass and broken beat by artists such as Tricky, Roni Size, and Bugz in the Attic. Then we head back to the States for the experiemental but soulful beats of today’s artist such as Flying Lotus, DJ Blaqstarr, Outputmessage and Pursuit Grooves.
