Freebie: Doomtree’s Dessa, “Dixon’s Girl”

Dessa Darling

A lot of people been asking about a song we have been playing early this year called “Sadie Hawkins” by a very talented artist by the name of Dessa Darling of the Minneapolis hip hop collective Doomtree. I get questions like: Is she going to put out an album or is she ever going to perform in Milwaukee. Well I got answers for both of those questions. Yes and yes.  Dessa Darling will be releasing a full length album on January 19th called “A Badly Broken Code”, and she will be performing with fellow Doomtree artist P.O.S. March 20th, at Turner Hall Ballroom.  However, if you can’t wait until March to see her, you can catch her in Madison with Kid Sister and fellow Doomtree artist Sims this New Year’s Eve. In the meantime, check out and download a track from her forthcoming album.

Electrohop… Trancehop… Thugstep…

Afrika Bambaataa
Legendary Godfather of Hip Hop – Afrika Bambaataa

There seems to be a new sub-genre of hip hop that is taking hold in the clubs, mixtapes and radio. Call it Electrohop, Trancehop or Thugstep(coined by XXL). It is Hip Hop music that is infused with dance beats. It is nothing really new. Afrika Bambaataa was doing this many moons ago when he sampled Kraftwerk. Artists such as Newcleus had big hits with Jam On It and Freestyle with “Don’t Stop the Rock. Check out this cool post from Missing Toof to learn more.

Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force – “Planet Rock” (1982)

Cybotron – “Clear”(1983)

Newcleus – “Jam On It” (1984)

Freestyle – “Don’t Stop the Rock”(1985)

Kid Cudi
East New York’s Kid Cudi (Fools Gold Records)

Artist like Missy Elliot sampled the Detroit Techno classic “Clear” by Cybotron for her song “Lose Control”. Even the Neptunes and Timabland have been doing it for a while. Now it seems this sound has taken a life on its own. Groups such as Cool Kids, Kid Cudi, Kid Sister, Atlanta’s Crime Mob, a new group from Alabama the Paper Route Gangstaz (download their mixtape sampler), and Milwaukee artists Juiceboxxx, Leo Minor and The Glamour use similar sounds in their music.

Princess(from Crime Mob) – “Pretty Rave Girl”

Kid Cudi – “Day ‘N’ Nite (Crookers Remix)” (Download here)

Juiceboxxx (DJ Technic Remix) – “Sweat”

Paper Route Gangstaz(PRGz) – “Rollin (Rustie Remix)

Wiz KhalifaThere is even a new artist from Pittsburgh by the name of Wiz Khalifa who has a track by name of “Say Yeah” which samples the 1999 Trance hit “Better Off Alone” by Alice DeeJay(the blog at Trace Magazine as interesting post on him). Even legendary producer Dr. Dre created dance infused tracks few years before NWA. Check out this post over at the Mad Decent Blog (the audio does contain adult languauge) of 2 mini mixes from Dr Dre from 1986.
