Bush’s pardon over a year ago to his forthcoming album, “Water, Light, Sound”, which was inspired by Bon Iver.  We also talked about his cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up The Hill”.  Listen to the whole interview uncut and un-edited.  John Forte will be on tour with Wale,  and K’Naan.

Nas & Damian Marley| Distant Relatives – The Roots of Hip Hop & Reggae

National Geographic Music held an amazing forum this past Saturday in Washington, DC. The forum was on the African origins of hip hop and reggae and the deep-rooted connections betweent the two.   Hip hop icon Nas, and reggae icon Damian Marley (son of Bob Marley) lead this forum that was moderated by Sway (MTV news). In addition to Nas and Damian Marley, Kool Herc, Rakim, Daddy U-Roy, King Jammy, Jeff Chang, Pat McKay, Waterflow and DJ Red Alert were also part of the discussion. You can watch the discussion in its entirety below.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

The title of the forum was Distant Relatives which is the same name of the project from Nas and Damian Marley, which will be released on March 16, 2010. Below is a sneak peek from the forthcoming album.

Free Figureheads Download and new EP from The Championship!

As you may know, Milwaukee’s own, Figureheads is one of the bands featured in this week’s New Music Wednesday.  In my opinion, this is one of the best New Music Wednesday’s that we’ve had to date.  Great music from K’Naan, The Noisettes and fellow Milwaukeeans, The Championship (who have a EP release party this Saturday June 27th at The Cactus Club.  They’ll also be at the 88Nine Radio Milwaukee mid-gate stage at Summerfest on June 30th at 7:30PM)

The Championship

The Championship

As I type, the Figureheads are leading the Milwaukee race by a pretty significant margin (63%-28%).  Now normally when people win, they receive a prize.  The Figureheads have decided to buck this trend by offering Radio Milwaukee listeners a free download of their track Specks Of Light.  Click on the link below to download this track free and legally.  If you like it, check out the Figureheads at Summerfest at The Refugee Stage on this Monday June 29th at 10PM.  In the meantime check out the video of the Figureheads collaborating with Northern Room last year at the Hi-Hat Garage.

Are You Feeling This: The Rural Alberta Advantage, Free Energy and K’Naan

Lots of songs never make it to the radio that are getting lots of attention online. Live tracks, sanctioned and unsanctioned remixes, mash-ups, overlooked gems by unsigned artists. Every week on “Are You Feeling This,” we invite you to hear what the buzz is all about. You tell us what you think. Vote in the Are You Feeling This poll, leave a comment, send us an e-mail.

The Last winner of Are You Feeling This was Regina Spektor

This week on ”Are You Feeling This” we have music from Canadian’s  and Saddle Creek band The Rural Alberta Advantage, DFA’s Free Energy and K’Naan with a song about the Somali pirates set to Kid Cudi’s “Day N Nite”. Take a listen below and let us know what you think by voting in the “Are You Feeling This” listener poll.

K’Naan On Somali Pirates…

Many of you in the know enough to read the news knows that there is a serious case of terror on the high sea off the coast of Somalia. The region is known as the Horn of Africa and is highly volatile as the area is geographically specific to Somalia and that Somalia has no government per se. Instead they got some scallywags with dinghies, rocket launchers on skiffs ready to board yer tanker and ransom them back. On the surface, it seems to be mere criminality, but K’Naan has not only new music here at 88Nine but also a point to make on this subject. Let’s hear him out…
