Interview | Dessa from Doomtree

Before I moved to Milwaukee, I lived in Minneapolis for about 9 years. About 6 years ago I did a local music show with three other friends on KFAI, a community station. We came up with this idea to put on a show at the Triple Rock Social Club featuring all local artists and bands. One of those artist was very young talented artist by the name of Dessa from a hip hop crew called Doomtree , which P.O.S was founding member. She totally amazed the crowd and me with her lyrics and music.

Not only she has an amazing flow, but she has amazing singing voice.  Her talents does not just include music, but she is also an accomplish writer. She wrote Sprial Bound, which is collection of stories, poems, and other literary gems. Fast-forward to today, Dessa recently release her debut release “A Badly Broken Code” on Doomtree Records, and she is currently on tour in support of the record. She will be playing Turner Hall Ballroom with crew mate P.O.S. on Saturday, March 20th.

I got a chance to talk to Dessa via phone a couple of weeks back. Take a listen (I apologize for the sound quality. Cell phone interviews can be rough).

Introducing Gayngs | A Midwestern Indie Supergroup (Mostly)

The music supergroup is either a hit or a miss, and given it’s overall record, it is usually a miss.  Last year it was N.A.S.A. Probably the most successful supergroup is the Gorillaz who have an album due out in March. I don’t think anything can compare to the newest supergroup of Gayngs.  What in the hell is Gayngs? Think of it as a Midwestern supergroup comprising mostly of Minnesota and Wisconsin artists.  Gayngs features Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and Mike Noyce, P.O.S and Dessa from Doomtree, Minneapolis Solid Gold,Ivan Howard of The Rosebuds, Lookbook of Milwaukee’s Listening Party Records, Andrew Bird’s touring band, jazz-saxophonist Michael Lewis of Minneapolis Happy Apple, Megafaun from North Carolina, and others. The album will be called Relayted and will be released on May 11, 2010 on Jagjaguwar.  Just read the one sheet to get an idea of the whole project:

Freebie: Doomtree’s Dessa, “Dixon’s Girl”

Dessa Darling

A lot of people been asking about a song we have been playing early this year called “Sadie Hawkins” by a very talented artist by the name of Dessa Darling of the Minneapolis hip hop collective Doomtree. I get questions like: Is she going to put out an album or is she ever going to perform in Milwaukee. Well I got answers for both of those questions. Yes and yes.  Dessa Darling will be releasing a full length album on January 19th called “A Badly Broken Code”, and she will be performing with fellow Doomtree artist P.O.S. March 20th, at Turner Hall Ballroom.  However, if you can’t wait until March to see her, you can catch her in Madison with Kid Sister and fellow Doomtree artist Sims this New Year’s Eve. In the meantime, check out and download a track from her forthcoming album.

Freebie: New P.O.S, “Goodbye”

Doomtree member and founder and Rhymesayer artist P.O.S. has a new album coming out on February 3rd on Rhymesayers. We have been playing the Doomtree song “Dots and Dashes” feat. P.O.S and Dessa here on 88Nine RadioMilwaukee.  Check out the new song “Goodbye” and let me know what you think.

Freebie: Doomtree, “Game Over”

Some of you might heard of the Minneapolis label and hip hop crew Rhymesayers. However, there is another crew that has been creating a noise for the past few years. The crew goes by Doomtree. Rhymesayer artist P.O.S. is one of the founding member of this 11 member crew consisting of MCs, DJs, and producers. Here at RadioMilwaukee, we recently added the song “Sadie Hawkins” by Dessa of Doomtree. Even though the crew is all about hip hop, they definitely has a punk d.i.y. ethos to their sound. They just dropped their official crew record this past week and it is sonically impressive.

The self-titled album, DOOMTREE, is a landmark for the group and a self-proclaimed beast. With 21 tracks, not only does the record build the momentum of the crew, but it also highlights their talents as solo artists. With an already outstanding catalog including fans of punk and indie rock, and rap purists, this release is sure to rally an even bigger audience with the call for independent thought. As Doomtree says, “The anthems are victorious, the storysongs are full of dream and intrigue, and the bangers reset pacemakers.”
