2 Reasons Why Sesame Street will always be hipper than MTV

Okay that last one was not really on Sesame Street, but it felt right. (Big ups to Soul Sides)

Kanye West is the Hottest MC…

Kanye West

MTV just held their 10 hottest MCs in the Game program. Kanye West won the top spot. Here is the rest of the list. Click on each name to see the panels explanation on their position on the list. Last year Lil’ Wayne took the top spot.

MTV Hottest MCs

1. Kanye
2. Jay-Z
3. Lil Wayne
4. Rick Ross
5. Snoop Dogg
6. 50 Cent
7. Lupe Fiasco
8. Young Jeezy
9. Andre 3000
10. T.I.

Alright, I have problems with this list. One Rick Ross and Young Jeezy should not be in the top 10. Look I like Rick Ross, but he hasn’t really deliver like some of these other artists. Young Jeezy should be in the top 15 not in the top 10. Andre 3000 should be higher just in fact no one can touch his style and flow. He can kill a song with just one verse, and that says a lot.

One artist that should be on this list is Bun B. I think it was a complete overlook on this panel’s post. Bun B had a crazy year. He lost his partner Pimp C which was one half of UGK. He has one of the most anticipated hip hop albums of the year. Only Lil’ Wayne has a more anticipated record. Bun B killed it on the M.I.A. remix of Paper Planes, and was on a track with Dizze Rascal which was sick. Plus Bun B has been everywhere as of late and has a legacy that can not be denied. Bun B should take Rick Ross #4 spot.

The next MC that should replaced Young Jeezy should be Slug not because I from Minneapolis, but because he is probably most popular and highest selling independent MC on an independet label, and he did it without compromise. Plus he is probably one of the hardest working man in the game. Slug is co-founder of the Rhymesayers. He has put at least 3 Sad Clown series and a full length album for free all in a year. Not to mention his latest album “When Life Gives You Lemons…”, sold 36,000 records in the first week alone, which is unheard of for an independent artist on an independent label. He reached #6 on the Top 200 Billboard Charts, and #5 on the Rap Charts.

Other than that, I am cool with the list. What are your thoughts?

Here is are some other MCs that need to get some props (in know particular order)

Jean Grae
Brother Ali
Kid Sister (nominated for a BET award for best female hip hop artist)
Cool Kids
David Banner
Invincible
Talib Kweli
Amanda Blank
Dizzee Rascal
Spank Rock
Big Boi
Wale

What MCs do you think MTV has overlooked?

MTV Loves Atmosphere

Minneapolis’ Atmosphere has the #2 independent record and the #5 Rap Album and #6 in the Top 200 charts on Billboard.  It is cool thing to see Atmosphere “grow up”. I saw them for the first time over 9 years ago at 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis. It was just a few months after I just moved to the Twin Cities. Atmosphere and the rest of the Rhymesayers really created something special for the Twin Cities. And now, MTV has made them an artist of the week.  You know it must be true when they say, “When Life Gives You Lemons, Paint that Sh#t Gold”

p.s.: Make sure check out the #8: Rap Battle in the video. You won’t regret it.

Pitchfork does what MTV should be doing

Pitchfork TV

The music website Pitchfork launches it’s online TV station tomorrow April 7th.

Pitchfork.tv will become the first online video channel to screen full-length feature films, vintage concerts, and music DVDs free of charge. From the Pixies’ 2004 reunion tour film LoudQuietLoud and Todd Phillips’ notorious GG Allin documentary Hated, to Jimmy Joe Roche & Dan Deacon’s acid-drenched visual art piece Ultimate Reality, Pitchfork.tv will highlight a different film each week in its entirety.

The station will launch with the “Behind the Scenes of the Pixies Reunion Tour”

Scrap Black Friday and don’t Buy Anything.

bndI find Black Friday, the Friday after Thanksgiving pretty surreal with all the advertising. It is a definite attack on my senses.  It almost has become a holiday on its own. In my opinion, I think it has corrupted what Thanksgiving and the rest of the holidays truly mean. Don’t get me wrong, I love buying some new fangle device, or some music. However, this can get a little extreme.  Take a look at this  video from last year and previous years where people get trampled in a store to grab some toys that are on sale.Adbusters  put together a campaign called Buy Nothing Day which happens today.   The Premise is simple; don’t buy anything today.  They have Public Service Announcement for their campaign which MTV won’t air because it is a little to extreme for their airwaves.

MTV, the channel that markets itself to hip youth, has decreed that our Buy Nothing Day public service spot “goes further than we are willing to accept on our channels”. Gangsta rap and sexualized, semi-naked school girls are okay, but apparently not a burping pig talking about consumption. If you object to this sort of corporate censorship, why not send them a message now?

Flashback Video: Genius of Love

Atari

This weekend I have been thinking of the good old days of music videos and when they played on a station called MTV. Does anybody remember music videos on MTV? For all you kids out there, this was before your time and reality shows. Anyway, I thought once in a while I’ll dig up an old music video. Here is Tom Tom Club’s ‘Genius of Love’.

Enjoy.
