Nas & Damian Marley| Distant Relatives – The Roots of Hip Hop & Reggae

National Geographic Music held an amazing forum this past Saturday in Washington, DC. The forum was on the African origins of hip hop and reggae and the deep-rooted connections betweent the two.   Hip hop icon Nas, and reggae icon Damian Marley (son of Bob Marley) lead this forum that was moderated by Sway (MTV news). In addition to Nas and Damian Marley, Kool Herc, Rakim, Daddy U-Roy, King Jammy, Jeff Chang, Pat McKay, Waterflow and DJ Red Alert were also part of the discussion. You can watch the discussion in its entirety below.

Salome de Bahia is Another Star

Another Stevie Wonder sample this morning. I had such a great time with Tuesday’s exlporation of old Stevie tunes, I thought we’d try another go at it. Today we explore “Another Star” , written and performed by Stevie Wonder from his 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life. It reached #32 on the Billboard Hot 100!

In 1999 Salomé De Bahia recorded a version in Portuguese by the name “Outro Lugar”. She teamed up with French Dj/producer Bob Sinclar. Sinclar has produced a number of house hits, has been nominated for a Grammy, and has worked with such artists as Madonna and Daft Punk.

Royksopp’s Too High

This week on the seven o clock sample, we are going to explore the sounds of Stevie Wonder. His catalog is chock full of juicy samples, breaks and melodies that producers have scooped up time and time again.
Today we are going to Norway, to listen to the electronic sounds of Norwegian electronic duo Royskopp.

The third song on the group’s third album is today’s selection. ( See if you can figure out where the bass line come from.

That funky little bassline comes from Stevie Wonder’s TOO HIGH, from the 1973 album INNERVISIONS.

President Obama celebrates the legend that is Stevie Wonder

Our nation’s President, Barak Obama presented the counties highest musical honor to the legendary song master Stevie Wonder. The Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize is our countries top pop music award. It celebrates the work of an artist whose career reflects lifetime achievement in promoting song as a vehicle of musical expression and cultural understanding.

It’s so inspiring for me as a musician and as an American, that while in the midst of financial crisis, international turmoil and a handful of headaches in Washington, our president and our nation are taking time to focus on all the good too. Who deserves this award MORE than Stevie Wonder???? Many may be equally as deserving, but I too must quote our nation’s president when I say that Stevie Wonder is the “soundtrack of my youth”.

I was fortunate enough to finally see the great Stevie Wonder when he came to Milwaukee this past summer. A show that made “act-a-fool” with excitement and energy. My friend Aleshea’s (then) unborn bay girl was movin’ it too! It was like going to church or a dream. The energy was intoxicating. At the show , Wonder spoke a lot about his dream for our country, and how Obama was a big part of that dream. Not only an African-American president, but a culturally aware one too.

This award has got me excited about what is to come from the children that are my son’s age. What kind of music are they going to bring to our world?

Here are some amazing vids of Stevie! I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Wonder’s performance will be broadcast Thursday on PBS stations as part of a White House series on the arts.

Catch Ryan Sallis at Summerfest

Word of mouth and great energy can amplify a long way. Milwaukee native, Ryan Sallis will be at Summerfest grounds again this year, July 2, 2008 at Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard. Sallis realized music was flowing through his veins at the age of twenty after receiving a gift from his mother, an acoustic guitar. Roughly 1100 days later he has released his debut album, Brighter Days, as well as rocked the house at the Highbury Pub, Bremen Cafe, and other venues throughout the Midwest.

Sallis was influenced at an early age by The Temptations, Earth, Wind & Fire, who will be live at Summerfest July 6, the man who kicked off the fest this year, Stevie Wonder, and Ray Charles. He enjoys the work of John Mayer, also be to rocking the fest grounds July 2, as well as Citizen Cope and newcomer Justin Nozuka.

Take a listen…you may want to join the party in the “backyard” with Sallis.

If you are looking to satisfy your ears with a more mellow cut, Sallis has that covered too. Listen for “Song For a Friend”, one of my favs off his debut album 🙂 Make sure you hit up the comment section with your reviews on Sallis!

Toodles!
