Another SUMMERFEST Catch Up!

For the past 9 days we have been down at, SUMMERFEST , the world’s largest music festival. With over 700 bands and 1 stages of music from Noon to Midnight each day of the fest, each day has brought great music here to Milwaukee.

This year’s Summerfest has brought a larger variety of acts to Milwaukee than years past.  The vibe around here, and among much of Milwaukee has been that Summerfest is actually kinda cool this year!

Our good friends at MINDPOOL PRODUCTIONS are recording SO MUCH video coverage of this year’s festival.  They are getting great interviews and live footage of the music on the lake front this year.

Here is a re-cap of what you may have missed this past week….

Our favorite ATL gang THE CONSTELLATIONS were the headliner on our stage Saturday night…

Tuesday night saw Hip Hop legends CYPRESS HILL…

Milwaukee’s own KHB opened up for Cypress Hill and Milwaukee’s newest super-group THE LAB EXPERIMENT opened for Public Enemy on the US CELLULAR Stage…

A number of great Milwaukee acts played the BIG GIG this year.  Jeanna Salzer, Ethan Keller, Willy Porter, Fever Marlene, Jaill, .357 String Band, and the Gufs ( to name just a few )

Even I ( Jordan ) had the chance to play Summerfest 3 times this year.  Tuesday with the Ethan Keller Band and on Monday and  this Friday, I was able to grace the stage with my best buddy KID CUT UP!

( we will be playing after PROPHETIC on the mIller Oasis as support for N.E.R.D. this Friday July 2nd! )

Crosby, Stills, Nash and B REAL?

This week on the Seven O Clock sample, we continue our exploration of the music of Summerfest.

The world’s largest music festival kicks continues today on Milwaukee’s lakefront, so I thought it’d be smart to look into some of the samples we may hear tonight.

Headlining the US Cellular stage tonight, is Hip Hop trio and rap legends CYPRESS HILL!

Cypress Hill just released, Rise Up; their eighth studio album. It is their first album of new material in six years, following 2004’s Till Death Do Us Part. This album features production from their DJ, MUGGS as well as Pete Rock, Jake One and Jim Jonsin. Jonsin produced their newest single, “Armada Latina'” which features Cuban rapper Pitbull and Puerto Rican singer Marc Anthony.

That’s a JAM! There is no doubt that is also a familiar and well-known sample…. Where is it from?

Well if you guessed it… It’s Crosby, Stills, and Nash. From their self titled 1969 release, here is Suite : Judy Blue Eyes.

(fast forward to 7:10 for the sample)

While you were out! ( A Summerfest catch up! )

If you’ve been under a rock for the past few days, SUMMERFEST is going on right now here in Milwaukee. Summerfest is the world’s largest music festival. With over 700 bands and 1 stages of music from Noon to Midnight each day of the fest, there are few festivals that can handle the marathon of music that is Summerfest.

As a life long Wisconsin resident, I ( and many of my peers ) take Summerfest for granted.  I’ve been going to Summerfest since I was a kid.  ( my mom has the pictures to prove it! )  So I realize that many of our listeners, followers and fans, may not have such an extensive Summerfest history, so I decided to bring you up to speed on what has been going on this past few days.

Our good friends at MINDPOOL PRODUCTIONS are recording SO MUCH video coverage of this year’s festival.  They are getting great interviews and live footage of the music on the lake front this year.

Here is what you’ve missed so far…

Opening night the legendary WAILERS were the headliners for the 88NINE Potowatomi Pavillion stage!

PASSION PIT also rocked the lake front at the  US Cellular stage…

On Friday night COWBOY MOUTH was the headliner on our stage…

The weekend saw a ton of great acts, Public Enemy, Theievery Corporation, The Constellations, Cage The Elephant, The Gufs, Robert Randolf, B.B. King and Less Than Jake to name a few.

Check out the Mindpool channel on YouTube, and check back with us for more updates and Summerfest fun.

Dear Monsters of Folk, It’s The Roots.

This week on the Seven O Clock sample, we are exploring the music of Summerfest artists.

The world’s largest music festival kicks off on Milwaukee’s lakefront TODAY!, so I thought it’d be smart to look into some of the samples we may hear at this summer’s festival.

On July 1st, one of Hip Hop’s greatest acts will be back at Summerfest!

THE ROOTS!

Their new album is out this week, on Def Jam!

Tarik broke the news of this track back in May on the ARE YOU FEELING THIS segment.

I assume the Roots may play this new one…

The Roots – “Dear God 2.0”

This example blurs the line between sampling and covering. Some may say this is better suited for the 5 O Clock Shadow, but I know the Roots. ( I really do, I’ve met them several times… ) and I know that they are not afraid to grab up a sample, and rework it.
This is a particularly interesting case, seeing as how the track is titled The Roots feat. Jim James and Monsters of Folk “Dear God 2.0”. The original was on the 2009 release from Jim James from My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes and M. Ward… THE MONSTERS OF FOLK!

Don’t Believe the Ants

On Friday June 25th, one of Hip Hop’s greatest acts will take the stage at Summerfest….

PUBLIC ENEMY!

( I hope they perform this one.. )

This track contains a large number of samples…

The Constellations Talks About Milwaukee and 88Nine In A Feature In Spin Magazine

Constellations Feature In Spin Magazine (June 2010)

Constellations Feature In Spin Magazine (June 2010)

In the most recent issue of Spin Magazine, Atlanta’s The Constellations were interview for a feature, and in the article they talk about Milwaukee and 88Nine RadioMilwaukee.  I thought it was real nice of the guys to do that and I wanted to share it with you.

“We sent songs to everyone,” explains the singer. “And [radio station] 88.9 in Milwaukee was the first to catch on. They invited us to play a show, and the day I got there, I heard three of our songs on the radio. Why that city was into music about what happens in Atlanta between midnight and 4.a.m. I have no idea…

I just want to congratulate The Constellations for all the success they are having right now.  You can click here to read the whole article. The Constellations will be at Summerfest on June 26th at 10pm at the Potawatomi Bingo Casino Stage & Pavilion with Miller High Life and 88Nine RadioMilwaukee.

New Roots, “Dear God 2.0”

The Roots are set to released the album “How I Got Over” on June 22nd, which  was originally scheduled to be release 8 months ago. The new single “Dear God 2.0” has recently appeared on the internet and it is a “re-working” of Monsters of Folk’s song by the same name. The track features Jim James from My Morning Jacket.  “How I Got Over” will also feature guest spots from Joanna Newsom, The Dirty Projectors, Cody Chesnutt and more. The Roots will be at this year’s Summerfest on July 1st at 10pm.
