Dear Monsters of Folk, It’s The Roots.

This week on the Seven O Clock sample, we are exploring the music of Summerfest artists.

The world’s largest music festival kicks off on Milwaukee’s lakefront TODAY!, so I thought it’d be smart to look into some of the samples we may hear at this summer’s festival.

On July 1st, one of Hip Hop’s greatest acts will be back at Summerfest!

THE ROOTS!

Their new album is out this week, on Def Jam!

Tarik broke the news of this track back in May on the ARE YOU FEELING THIS segment.

I assume the Roots may play this new one…

The Roots – “Dear God 2.0”

This example blurs the line between sampling and covering. Some may say this is better suited for the 5 O Clock Shadow, but I know the Roots. ( I really do, I’ve met them several times… ) and I know that they are not afraid to grab up a sample, and rework it.
This is a particularly interesting case, seeing as how the track is titled The Roots feat. Jim James and Monsters of Folk “Dear God 2.0”. The original was on the 2009 release from Jim James from My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes and M. Ward… THE MONSTERS OF FOLK!

Are You Feeling This | The Roots, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, James Blake and Poni Hoax

Lots of songs never make it to the radio that are getting lots of attention online. Live tracks, sanctioned and unsanctioned remixes, mash-ups, overlooked gems by unsigned artists. Every week on “Are You Feeling This,” we invite you to hear what the buzz is all about. You tell us what you think. Vote in the Are You Feeling This poll, leave a comment, send us an e-mail.

We have music from The Roots from their forthcoming album “How I Got Over”, elctronic producer James Blake, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and Poni Hoax . Take a listen below and let us know what you think by voting in the “Are You Feeling This” listener poll.

New Roots, “Dear God 2.0”

The Roots are set to released the album “How I Got Over” on June 22nd, which  was originally scheduled to be release 8 months ago. The new single “Dear God 2.0” has recently appeared on the internet and it is a “re-working” of Monsters of Folk’s song by the same name. The track features Jim James from My Morning Jacket.  “How I Got Over” will also feature guest spots from Joanna Newsom, The Dirty Projectors, Cody Chesnutt and more. The Roots will be at this year’s Summerfest on July 1st at 10pm.

Are THE ROOTS taking Ecstasy?

Today’s Seven O Clock Sample brings together two of my favorite groups. I can’t remember the last gig I played records where I didn’t play either or both of these groups.
Our sampler today… THE ROOTS.
From the album Game Theory It’s the single ” Don’t Feel Right”

That OOH OH OH that you hear in there comes from the funk classic “Ecstasy” from the Ohio Players

… and as a side not, the bridge for the 3rd verse in “Don’t Feel Right” is the bridge from JUNGLE BOOGIT by Kool & The Gang.

WOW! I love samples.
